AGE 16+ DUE TO MATURE THEMES AND CONTENT
he Goddess Movement’s spring dance and theatre production, “1855”, tells the story of seven women in Montana in 1885, each with their own story of oppression and freedom. Enjoy the colourful, playful, and meaningful story of life in small town, old west Montana.
This is not a traditional country-western show; be prepared for a wide range of music, dance styles, comedy, and emotions. Much research has gone into the show and the characters are all abased on real life people, and represents range of experiences often left out of stories of the old West – the social history of women, Indigenous people and people of colour.
We are committed to portraying the history of colonization and are committed to telling the truth as best we know it.
We are excited to welcome an Indigenous dancer as part of this years production and have worked with local Indigenous community members, including a sensitivity reader, to review the scrip and performance delivery. As part of our commitment to reconciliation, we will be supporting VYPER (Visionary Youth Peers for Equity and Revitalization) with proceed from the “1885” show.
VYPER is a powerful youth-led group that hosts weekly cultural nights in Abbotsford among other cultural events province wider. VYPER PowWow nights connect people to cultural dancing and the making of traditional regalia.

Don’t Miss This Unique Performance in recognition National Indigenous People’s Day.
This family-friendly performance is inspired the our award-winning children’s book Semá:th X̱ó:tsa: Sts’ólemeqwelh Sx̱ó:tsa / Great-Gramma’s Lake.
Working with professional puppeteer Tamara Unroe and drama educator Ana Horner, eight students from Abbotsford School of Integrated Arts (ASIA) – Sumas Mountain immersed themselves in the story of Semá:th X̱ó:tsa (Sumas Lake) to develop this spectacular performance. The students bring to life three larger-than-life illuminated puppets based on more-than-human beings that would have once lived in and around the lake.
Admission is free, but you must register to attend.
- June 19: 10:00 am & 11:30 am (School Groups)
